The Erosion of Civility: A Reflection on Our Times

Rant by Publisher Shawn Crabb, “Sorry Not Sorry”

In an era where news of deceit, theft, bullying, and assault flood our daily lives, one cannot help but question: What has become of our society? This trend of diminishing civility and increasing hostility seems to be rampant, irrespective of our challenging economic climate. It’s a period when unity and mutual support should prevail, especially to bolster small businesses and the community at large. Yet, it appears that the strain of financial burdens is pushing some towards the brink of forsaking their humanity.

Disagreements, particularly in politics and worldviews, have always existed. However, the current climate seems to foster hatred over understanding, severing ties that once bound us. This divergence from the American ethos of valuing freedom, including the liberty to hold personal opinions, is alarming.

The crux of the issue seems to delve deeper, touching on a growing dependency on government assistance. This is not a dismissal of the necessary support systems that aid those in genuine need but a critique of a burgeoning mindset that favors reliance over resilience. The expectation for government to solve all problems, rather than fostering a spirit of self-reliance and community support, is worrying.

Our societal fabric appears to be at a crossroads, caught between the desire for assistance and the enduring American value of hard work. With inflation, taxes, and the soaring cost of living chipping away at the fruits of our labor, the easy route of dependency might seem appealing. Yet, this path leads away from the essence of what it means to be responsible citizens—individuals who contribute, who work hard despite the odds, who own their successes and failures.

The movie Wall-E vividly portrays the dire consequences of a society that has relinquished its sense of responsibility, expecting the government to address all its woes. It paints a future where humanity is so conditioned to rely on government intervention that the notion of personal effort seems obsolete. In this dystopian vision, AI and robots emerge as the new backbone of society, tirelessly working while humans languish in passivity. This scenario serves as a stark warning: if we continue to sit back and view the government as the ultimate solution, we risk losing the very essence of what it means to be human.

The concept of a utopia where everything is free, a society devoid of ownership and personal responsibility, is a fantasy that could spell the demise of our core values. As Wall-E suggests, a future dominated by dependency and inaction is bleak. Our race needs to suit up and dig in to halt our societal decline—not recline and accept government handouts as the panacea.

It’s time for a shift in mindset. Initiating a home business, teaching our children the value of earning through simple tasks like mowing a lawn for $10.00—these are steps towards reclaiming our independence and instilling a sense of responsibility in the next generation. Let’s face it: It’s time for all of us to act like adults, embrace hard work, and rekindle the spirit of civility and community that seems to be fading away. Only then can we hope to rebuild the social fabric that seems to be unraveling before our eyes.
